Superman filmmaker/DC Studios co-chair James Gunn has verified that Man of Tomorrow, his follow-up to the summer smash, is slated to roll cameras shortly. Better yet, he’s revealed that the picture will unite Superman and Lex Luthor against a menace that endangers them equally.

“It’ll arrive July 9, 2027—only two years away—an unusually tight gap for sequels, because we already knew the path forward,” Gunn tells Howard Stern on his Sirius XM program. “The plot forces Lex and Superman into an uneasy alliance against a vastly larger danger. It’s as much Lex’s film as Kal-El’s. Disturbingly, I identify with Luthor.”

The exact antagonist remains undisclosed, yet preview imagery shows Luthor clad in his iconic power suit beside the Man of Steel. Still, the prime suspect is obvious: Brainiac, a foe long entangled with both heroes across comics, cartoons, and games.

Asecond extraterrestrial baddie would also stoke Lex’s resentment of Superman’s alien supremacy—an envy Gunn calls the villain’s beating heart.

“That jealousy is Lex’s core,” Gunn explains. “Until Superman showed up three years ago, Luthor was hailed as humanity’s premier champion, metahumans or not.”
