Kazutaka Kodaka’s recent strategy RPG, The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, launched just a few weeks ago, yet the developer finds itself in a precarious financial situation.

By most standards, The Hundred Line appears to have been well-received by gamers. On Steam, the title boasts over 1,400 user evaluations, with 91% giving it a favorable rating. Additionally, it has garnered positive feedback on Metacritic and similar platforms, but it hasn’t entirely rescued its developer, Too Kyo Games.

On BlueSky, a supporter inquired about the potential for The Hundred Line to be released on additional platforms following its debut on PC and Nintendo Switch on April 24, 2025. Co-director and creator of Danganronpa, Kazutaka Kodaka, responded by stating: “If I can settle my debts promptly and ensure sufficient operational funds for the company, I’d be eager to embark on it immediately. Presently, we’re still teetering on the edge of going under.”

Kodaka previously shared insights on how the studio “incurred significant debt” during the game’s development, as financing a stylish high school visual novel combined with a tactical RPG featuring approximately 100 distinct endings is a considerable endeavor.

For those unfamiliar, Too Kyo Games was co-founded by Kodaka and Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi. The visual novel stars collaborated on a few projects together, but The Hundred Line stands as the team’s most expansive and ambitious venture to date. Here’s hoping the duo can continue producing captivating and unpredictable titles while achieving financial recovery.

Meanwhile, explore some of the other upcoming games of 2025 to see what’s on the horizon.
