Next year will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original Crash Bandicoot, yet this anthropomorphic character hasn’t had any television series or film adaptations of his own in the past thirty years. Nonetheless, a recent report indicates that Crash Bandicoot might finally receive a TV series on Netflix.
As reported by What’s on Netflix, an animated series featuring Crash Bandicoot is being produced by WildBrain Studios. The report does not specify any members of the creative team working on the project, but WildBrain does have a background in the gaming industry. They were the studio responsible for Sonic Prime and Carmen Sandiego. Other works by the studio include Johnny Test, Go Dog Go, The Snoopy Show, Fireman Sam, and Polly Pocket.
Netflix currently offers a variety of video game-related series on its platform, such as Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, two versions of Castlevania, Devil May Cry, and the recently launched Splinter Cell: Deathwatch. Netflix is also working on Assassin’s Creed as a live-action series.
The initial Crash Bandicoot game was created by Naughty Dog and released on PlayStation 1. Over time, the rights to Crash Bandicoot were acquired by Universal Interactive and currently lie with Activision. The latest installment in the franchise was Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, which came out in 2020. Last year, a concept artist from Toys for Bob stated that Crash Bandicoot 5 was halted during its development.
Earlier this year, former Sony executive—and current CEO of Sega of America—Shuji Utsumi disclosed that Hollywood rejected the publisher’s proposal for a Crash Bandicoot film. Naughty Dog head Neil Druckmann has expressed his support for a Crash Bandicoot movie, but he also remarked that it’s now Microsoft’s decision, since the gaming titan acquired Activision.
