Aaaaaaaaa I’m not sure

Gamers have lately been mulling over an enigmatic X/Twitter profile that appears to give a nod—if a quiet one—to Super Mario’s looming 40th celebration.
As The Gamer highlighted, the X handle @supermario40th is stirring up chatter; some believe it’s the real deal, hinting that Nintendo is gearing up for a splashy salute to the mustachioed icon. For now, the page is entirely empty aside from the username, the curious ‘aaaaaaaaa’ display name, and a lone follow for Nintendo’s Japanese account.
Why bring it up? Simple: Nintendo has danced this dance previously. Back in 2020, the still-extant @supermario35th account followed an almost identical script—including the same “aaaaaaaaaaa” name, give or take a couple extra letters—and we reported on it here on Nintendo Life.
The wrinkle now? The would-be 40th-anniversary profile appears to have been minted in 2020 itself. That leaves two possibilities: Nintendo secured the handle early to squat on it, or else an opportunistic user claimed it in the hope that Nintendo will eventually come knocking with a friendly request.
On 3 September 2020, Nintendo broadcast its lavish 35th-anniversary Direct for Super Mario. Repeating that exact formula seems unlikely this time around, but it wouldn’t hurt to watch for a reveal in the next few weeks.
Do you reckon this X page is authentic? What surprises are you hoping for during the 40th anniversary? Drop your thoughts in the comments.
