Cobra Kai co-creator Josh Heald mentions that The Next Karate Kid star Hilary Swank ultimately declined an opportunity to feature on the series – and I’d be misleading if I claimed my heart didn’t ache.

“We did reach out in the very beginning stages before the season to explore if there was a possibility [for her to join],” Heald informed IndieWire. “We had a notion of how she could fit into this narrative without having to commit to 10 episodes or anything like that.”

“She didn’t want us to go through the hassle of traveling to her and laying our hearts bare because it simply wasn’t something she was prepared to undertake at that time,” Heald stated. “From her perspective, it was very considerate, but we never received the chance to sit down and express our feelings the way we typically do when we reintroduce characters from the legacy.”

The fourth installment in the Karate Kid series showcased Mr. Miyagi mentoring Swank’s Julie Pierce as his new apprentice in a different setting. The film was a critical and commercial disappointment at the time (despite being the top movie in the box office of my heart) and has since become a cult favorite. Christopher Cain directed from a script by Mark Lee, with a cast that featured a pre-fame Walton Goggins as the secondary villain.
