CDPR’s Ex-Witcher 3 Lead Reflects on RPG Storytelling Challenges in Open World Games

In a recent discussion, Witcher 3 lead quest designer Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz revealed that CDPR was initially concerned that players might not resonate with the expansive narrative typical of classic RPGs set within an open-world framework.

Recently, I had the chance to engage in a detailed conversation with Tomaszkiewicz regarding his latest project, the open-world dark fantasy RPG Blood of Dawnwalker, currently under development at Insurrection Wolves. At one point, I inquired whether he believed that the unique “time as a resource” mechanic in Dawnwalker might deter some gamers. He acknowledged that he is well aware of the risks involved in game development, having played a key role in creating The Witcher 3, the pioneering title of the RPG series’ first truly immersive open world.

“Not many games were attempting what we accomplished during that period. We aimed to merge expansive storytelling techniques typically found in more linear RPGs, like The Witcher 2, which had a more constrained structure, and we aimed to adapt that to an open-world format,” he explained.

“There was indeed a risk involved, as we had this extensive narrative in The Witcher 3. Initially, we were uncertain if players would appreciate this or if it would align with the playstyle expected from an open-world game. Yet, we embraced those challenges, doing everything we could to manage them. Ultimately, I believe it turned out remarkably well.”

Considering that The Witcher 3 is widely regarded as one of the greatest RPGs ever developed, I would say it indeed succeeded.

The Blood of Dawnwalker is already showcasing its Witcher 3 origins, but it also brings to mind my favorite underrated vampire RPG.
