Citizen Kane is frequently referenced as the shorthand for “the pinnacle of its medium,” and while this might not be entirely accurate in Citizen Kane’s instance, given the existence of films like 12 Angry Men, Harakiri, and The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, “the Citizen Kane of X” is a widely used expression. Although some claim that the Citizen Kane of video games could be titles like Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid, Chrono Trigger, or Super Mario 64, Gearbox leader Randy Pitchford asserts that the industry has yet to produce a Citizen Kane.
