Marvel Studios has faced challenges in getting its planned Blade reboot underway, with the film starring Mahershala Ali going through multiple writers and directors in pursuit of the ideal narrative. However, according to actress Mia Goth, who is also cast in Blade, the prolonged journey to production is essential for achieving success.
“It’s for the best that it has taken the time it needs,” Goth remarks to Elle. “They aim to do it correctly.”
Blade was revealed back in the summer of 2019 with Ali set to portray the character that was originally brought to life on screen by Wesley Snipes. Ironically, it’s Snipes’ Blade that has received the most MCU attention, with a supporting appearance in Deadpool and Wolverine.
In contrast, Ali’s Blade has had just one minor MCU cameo, featuring as an offscreen voice speaking to Kit Harrington’s Dane Whitman in one of the post-credits sequences for 2021’s Eternals, a film that performed poorly both critically and commercially.
Since its announcement, Blade has encountered various developmental issues, with the initial concept, a flashback to the early 20th century, collapsing – causing the period costumes Marvel had already designed and collected for the film to be sold to the production of Ryan Coogler’s Sinners.
It’s uncertain exactly what path Blade will follow when (or if) it finally materializes, although Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige asserts that the film is still in the works. Fans are left doubtful, but it appears Marvel is still striving to get it right.
