Historicity. Yum!

Now, we can’t be certain if you’re informed — or if you’re even trendy enough to know — about the indie horror phenomenon, Baldi’s Basics, but rest assured, this is an exceedingly odd piece of PC gaming eccentricity. Indeed, it merges gritty educational games from the 1990s with an eerily disturbing twist, offering an experience that’s strictly for adults and currently enjoying a “Very Positive” rating over on ye olde Steam.
Yes, if bizarre games are your thing, this is… well… your kind of game, friend. Judging by the official trailer for the 2022 remaster, which we’ve kindly placed above, it’s the type of clunky, indie horror creation we (or this contributor, at least) simply adore exploring out of sheer curiosity. It resembles a game where anything could occur, in an unsettling manner.
Baldi’s immense popularity is surely bolstered by appearances from several well-known YouTubers, like Jacksepticeye, who can be seen here being…disciplined by an in-game teacher… leading to demands for a console release.
With this in mind, and equipped with numerous questions, YouTuber ‘Nintendrovert’ engaged in an extensive discussion with Baldi’s Basics creator Micah James McGonigle (often known as Mystman12).
McGonigle shares that his career in game development began to flourish when he acquired a 3DS and started utilizing programs like SmileBASIC — which now has a fourth version for Switch — to craft his own adventures. He discloses that the original Baldi game took just two (chaotic) weeks to create, and he is actively seeking publishers for a console edition that would encompass everything in one cohesive remastered collection.
The interview, lasting nearly two hours, also explores various fascinating aspects of McGonigle’s connection with Nintendo throughout his life and career, along with insights into how he chose his Mystman12 username. You can find the full discussion below, and it’s worth a deep dive as there are abundant delightful Nintendo-specific nuggets to uncover, alongside discussions about upcoming projects.
