Shortly after entering Shatterscarp in Avowed, you must be prepared to tackle numerous side quests. One of the initial side quests that you will likely encounter is titled “That Which Remains.” This quest commences by traversing the Dreamthrall-ridden land outside Eagle’s Reach. From the outset, That Which Remains is shrouded in enigma, and by its conclusion, you will likely desire to obtain a resolution regarding the fate of a community.

To find guidance on completing That Which Remains from start to finish in Avowed, refer to the quest guide below.

Locating the Diary and opening the Well

Discovering the Diary and opening the Well

That Which Remains commences once you find an Aedyran Cleric’s body and recover the “Flame-Eaten Diary.” Upon reading the diary, you will discover that some nearby villagers constructed a laboratory in the area, but something went dreadfully wrong. To investigate the lab further, you will need to locate several keys. The first is the Compare Home key, which you should be able to find in the adjacent apartment where the unfortunate cleric lies. Once you have the Compare Home Key, make your way to a blue quest area where you must enter the laboratory.

Your objective in the lab is to find the Well Key, which is located on a desk in the back room beside a note. With the Well Key obtained, proceed until you find a water well. Interact with the well to access the entrance to the Scaedclef Grotto. Descend further to continue the quest.

Investigate the Grotto

Explore the Grotto

Inside the Scaedclef Grotto, your sole quest objective is to explore the area. No quest markers or guidance will be provided, which can make it challenging to understand what to do as you navigate inside. In the initial chamber adorned with countless purple crystals, eliminate all spider enemies and then proceed towards the back where the cobwebs are. On the left side of this rear passage, you should notice a wall without cobwebs. When you get close enough, you will see that the wall is destructible by throwing any type of explosive at it. The prompt to throw an explosive at the wall will only appear when you are very close, making it easy to miss.

Throw a grenade at the wall and move deeper into the grotto. As a note, you may also ascend the left-side path in the crystal room, but that won’t lead you anywhere significant. You will most likely only find a small chest there.

Speak with the survivors

Talk to the survivors

In the following room, you will come across a cage containing several individuals affected by the Dreamscourge. While you cannot communicate with them directly, you might overhear murmurs coming from the other side of a wall. A door exists that leads into the area where these survivors are, but it will likely be locked. Thankfully, all you need to do is climb over the rocks to the right of the cage and enter the chamber with the survivors.

Fortunately, the survivors are friendly, and after conversing with them, you will learn that they are the inhabitants of the laboratory you previously explored. However, some of their colleagues began showing symptoms of the Dreamscourge and set fire to the lab. The lab personnel who did not succumb to the affliction hurried into the Scaedclef Grotto, but the people now enclosed in the cage subsequently fell prey to the Dreamscourge as well. Now, the survivors are uncertain whether they should put an end to them or allow them to remain alive, but they are desperate for a solution.

Should you kill the Dreamthralls or ask for provisions?

Should you eliminate the Dreamthralls or request assistance?

The survivors present you with two options in regard to their current predicament. They are unable to eliminate the Dreamthralls themselves, as they were once their friends and family, but they also require supplies from the Aedyrans stationed at Eagle’s Reach. One survivor simply requests that you eliminate the Dreamthralls for them, while another believes the Dreamthralls should be spared and asks for your support.
