Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has successfully tackled the challenging endeavor of revitalizing turn-based combat—a system that is over 30 years old—making it feel modern and relevant. Even the turn-based giants at JRPG pioneer Square Enix appear to have taken notice. In a recent blog entry, with an enthusiasm not typically present in their latest posts, Square Enix invites fans to evaluate its “exceptional battle systems.”

“Numerous components are essential for a superb RPG: an engaging world, unforgettable characters, or an outstanding soundtrack, to name a few,” states Square Enix editorial manager Duncan Heaney. “However, one of the most vital is undoubtedly the combat system.”

“Which is the top combat system in a Square Enix title?” continues the developer on Twitter. “What do you enjoy the most?”

The 2 million (and counting) players who have recently acquired Expedition 33 are a great demographic to consult. Producer and co-founder of Sandfall Interactive, François Meurisse, told us earlier this spring during GDC 2025 that this French RPG draws inspiration from “Final Fantasy 10” and earlier titles on PlayStation such as 7, 8, and 9—games from Square Enix characterized by both flair and turn-based depth.

In recent times, however, Square Enix has moved away from the classic turn-based nature of the Final Fantasy series. Now, industry analyst Rhys Elliott indicates to GamesIndustry.biz that the company might be regretting its decision. Expedition 33 has provided RPG enthusiasts with something they have long desired.

The interesting timing of Square Enix’s celebratory blog suggests the company may indeed be feeling some envy. Or perhaps they recognized that RPG combat systems are trending and wanted to partake in the conversation. This blog might have been in development for weeks or even months—the specifics are uncertain.

Certainly, Square Enix also boasts a vast range of its own outstanding combat mechanics, referred to by Heaney as “grandiose battle systems,” featured in their blog with titles like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Octopath Traveler 2, and Valkyrie Elysium. Bravely Default is acknowledged too, as it stands out as one of the most innovative turn-based offerings in recent years.

Weekly summaries, tales from beloved communities, and more.

Square categorizes these games into turn-based, real-time action, and “hybrid” systems such as Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth. Action systems have undeniably grown in popularity, but as the battle lead of Metaphor: ReFantazio shared with us, there’s an irreplaceable essence exclusive to turn-based titles.

“Each experience is distinct, so whether you’re after pure action or strategic turn-based gameplay, there’s something for everyone,” Heaney concludes.
