The debut teaser for Anemone has landed, ushering Daniel Day-Lewis back onto screens after an eight-year gap—and the mood is a haunting family gathering.
The fleeting preview, embedded beneath, shows Jem Stoker (Sean Bean) bidding suburbia goodbye and heading deep into the forest, where he meets the sibling he’s been estranged from for roughly two decades—Ray (Day-Lewis), a reclusive former soldier. “I can’t assist you,” Jem warns. “First, you have to explain what went down.” Images flicker between a chilling crayon sketch by a child, a lifeless sea animal, and the crack of gunshots, before Jem declares that Ray is “headed for damnation.”
Rookie feature-film director Ronan—Day-Lewis’s own son—helms the film; together the two also scripted it. According to its official synopsis, the drama “examines the intricate, deep bonds linking brothers, fathers and sons.” Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley, and Safia Oakley-Green round out the cast.

Anemone signifies Day-Lewis’s return after 2017’s Phantom Thread—itself an Oscar magnet, taking Best Costume Design and scoring multiple top-category nods. Weeks after that release, his publicist issued a short statement: “Daniel Day-Lewis has decided to stop acting. He offers deep gratitude to every colleague and viewer across the years.”
The picture will bow at the New York Film Festival in September 2025, hit select cinemas on October 3, and widen on October 10. Dive deeper with our lineup of the most anticipated movies still to come in 2025 and further.
