Shovel Knight is set to appear in both NecroDancer titles shortly

It is a commonly accepted fact that at some stage in an indie game’s journey, it will receive a Shovel Knight crossover. This holds true even if your indie title is ten years old, it appears.

Brace Yourself Games has revealed that 2015’s Crypt of the NecroDancer (which launched on Switch a couple of years later) is getting its very own Shovel Knight DLC. This new content introduces the indie hero into the roguelike rhythm game as a new character with a unique moveset, weaponry, and shortcuts.

The trailer above provides a glimpse of the DLC in motion, but it’s fair to say that witnessing a pixelated Shovel Knight bouncing around with his tiny shovel still brings us immense joy.

You’ll also observe from the trailer that Crypt of the NecroDancer isn’t the only one experiencing this shovel-themed expansion. Rift of the NecroDancer is also participating in the DLC excitement, with a new Shovel Knight pack that introduces the following tracks to the rhythm game:

  • “La Danse Macabre (Lich Yard)”
  • “Strike the Earth! (Plains of Passage)”
  • “In the Halls of the Usurper (Pridemoor Keep)”
  • “High Above the Land (The Flying Machine)”
  • “An Underlying Problem (The Lost City)”

Rift is even receiving Jake Kaufman’s main Shovel Knight theme as a complimentary addition free of charge, allowing everyone to experience it.

The unfortunate news is that we currently lack a precise Switch release date for either of these expansions. Both DLC packs were launched on Steam yesterday, but the most that Brace Yourself Games has confirmed thus far is that the Switch version will be available “at a later date.” We will be monitoring for further details in the upcoming weeks, as we are truly enjoying this DLC.

Will you be acquiring either of these DLC packs? Dig into the comments and share your thoughts.
