Daredevil: Born Again Poised to Revitalize the Franchise After Stagnation in Previous Series
Daredevil: Born Again showrunner Dario Scardapane announces that the forthcoming Marvel series will feature significant variations from the original Netflix program.
“There’s a lot more enjoyment in the interactions among these characters and considerably less introspection than there was previously,” he mentions in the latest edition of SFX magazine, which showcases Daredevil: Born Again on the cover and will be available on January 29.
“The previous show, at its peak, was exceptional. At its lowest points, it consisted of two characters in a room debating what constitutes a hero. I believed that had been overdone. I’m not throwing shade. I simply didn’t want to listen to characters lamenting about their circumstances. I wanted to witness them taking action.”
One substantial alteration he implemented was in the pacing of scenes, Scardapane notes, referencing his experience with The Punisher. “One of our directives was to create longer scenes,” he reflects. “You used to have these extensive 5-page scenes of characters sorting out their issues in order to build tension before those major action sequences. Given how things have progressed since then, we can achieve remarkable action sequences at a much quicker pace.”
“I believe Netflix’s Daredevil, which is in my DNA, leaned more into noir, whereas this show represents more of a New York crime narrative,” he continues. “It incorporates elements reminiscent of The Sopranos and King Of New York. There’s an appreciation for those classic ’90s crime stories. It features a tempo and a reach that, for various reasons, Netflix was unable to accomplish. Their productions were visually quite dark, though not necessarily story-wise, despite some dark themes. We’re considerably darker.”
