Oscar-winning actress Marion Cotillard admits she “messed up” a particular scene in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, which has sparked intense discussions among fans for more than ten years.

Reuniting with Nolan after Inception, Cotillard portrayed Wayne Enterprises’ CEO Miranda Tate in the sequel to The Dark Knight, which premiered in 2012. Spoiler alert, her character initially appears as a supporter of Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne, but is eventually unveiled as Talia al Ghul, an associate of Tom Hardy’s masked antagonist Bane.

After attempting to undermine Batman and kill Gotham, Cotillard’s character meets her end in a dramatic fashion. In her death scene, the French actress delivers a monologue awkwardly while perched in a stunningly overturned truck. “My father’s work is done,” she breathes out in her final moments. However, many fans argue that the emotional weight of the scene is diminished by the peculiarity of Cotillard’s performance.

The actress concurs. “I didn’t succeed in that scene,” she stated when a fan inquired about it during a segment on the French TV show Les rencontres du Papotin (via Reddit).

“I couldn’t locate the correct position, I couldn’t find the right approach… I was anxious. It happens sometimes, we flub our performance. And this, I flubbed,” she further explained.

As a recurring topic among The Dark Knight enthusiasts since the film’s release, this isn’t the first occasion Cotillard has commented on the scene. Back in 2016, she discussed it during an interview with Allociné.

“At times, failures occur, and when you witness this on screen, you’re left wondering: ‘Why?’
