GOG has pledged to preserve Warcraft 1 and 2 even though they’re set to be removed from its store on December 13, 2024.

While not officially verified, it appears likely that the games are being withdrawn due to the recently launched remasters.

As part of its game preservation initiatives, however, GOG stated in a blog post that once a game enters its archive program, the company will “commit to maintaining [a game’s] compatibility even if it is removed from the [GOG] store”.

“At GOG, we strongly believe that games should endure eternally,” the team expressed. “This means not only preserving them but also making sure they remain reachable, refreshed, and delightful on contemporary systems.”

“We take immense pride in the effort we’ve put into reviving Warcraft 1 and Warcraft 2, reintroducing them after years of inaccessibility. Through our work, we’ve added numerous enhancements to both games, including multiplayer capabilities over LAN and improved graphical settings such as antialiasing and anisotropic filtering.”

Consequently, as part of its preservation strategy, GOG confirms it is dedicated to ensuring “owners of these titles can continue to enjoy a seamless experience and support for those games.”

“We appreciate the chance to collaborate with Blizzard on these titles. Although the delisting is regrettable, we assure you that every player who currently owns these games on GOG will keep benefiting from our commitment and will have access to versions that stay compatible with modern systems, preserving their experience for years ahead,” GOG concluded.
