Classic Perspective: Former PlayStation Executive Reflects on Xbox’s Innate Strategy

Since departing from PlayStation not long ago, industry veteran Shuhei Yoshida has had a lot to discuss regarding his experiences in gaming – and fresh statements this week touch upon Microsoft and the company’s new strategy with Xbox.

In a conversation with Best Stand Media, Yoshida addressed a variety of topics while guesting on a recent podcast episode, including commentary on Xbox’s latest multiplatform initiatives (thanks, VGC). The former PlayStation executive remarked that “it’s somewhat natural to understand what they are pursuing,” referencing “the install base of Xbox hardware” as a significant reason to embrace multiplatform development.

“Considering the install base of Xbox hardware, it’s pretty logical to appreciate their direction, and it’s rather straightforward.

It’s very evident if a platform is in the minority, and if I were to develop a game exclusively for that minority platform, it would be unsustainable.”

Yoshida further articulated that should he find himself working on the ‘minority’ platform, it might have been a “nightmare,” explaining that “it would be unfeasible to support first-party development” because creators “desire their games to reach the largest audience” – also noting that it could be difficult to attract talent for that platform.

These insights from the former Sony employee are indeed fascinating, and they certainly resonate with us. The impact of games not reaching a wide audience is a perspective we might not have considered deeply – and it’s refreshing to gain some insider knowledge on such matters from someone who has undoubtedly experienced a lot in the gaming industry.
