Chris Evans is reportedly making a comeback to the MCU for Avengers: Doomsday.
According to TheWrap, Evans, who is well-known for portraying Steve Rogers as Captain America from his MCU debut in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger through to 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, may have an undisclosed part in Avengers: Doomsday. The specifics of the role remain unclear, meaning it could range from a brief cameo to a leading part.
Deadline further indicates that Anthony Mackie, who plays the current version of Captain America as Sam Wilson, will also be making his return.
It’s noteworthy that Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. caused quite a stir when he revealed his role as villain Doctor Doom at San Diego Comic-Con back in July. Meanwhile, Evans hung up his shield in Endgame, where his character is seen as a very old man. He also made a brief appearance in the MCU for a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine, but as Johnny Storm, a character he portrayed in the Fantastic Four films. This could be the first instance of Evans reprising his role as Steve Rogers since Endgame.
The Russo Brothers, directors of Avengers: Endgame, Infinity War, and Civil War, are set to return to direct Doomsday, which is scheduled for a theatrical release on May 1, 2026. In addition to Downey Jr. and, now reportedly, Evans, the cast includes Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, and Wyatt Russell. Its subsequent installment, Avengers: Secret Wars, is set for May 7, 2027.
