Super Smash Bros. Ultimate enthusiasts worldwide have this week turned to social media and various corners of the internet to commemorate the game’s sixth anniversary.
This installment was initially launched exclusively for the Switch on December 7, 2018 and was subsequently enhanced with several significant updates, including two DLC Fighter Passes. The renowned Japanese publication Famitsu also took a moment to recognize this milestone:
“Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” was launched on December 7, 2018. This year marks the sixth anniversary…Everyone is participating!”
Although major updates officially concluded earlier this year in February with the addition of the final DLC fighter Sora from Kingdom Hearts, there have been spirit updates along with some new enhancements since then, with Version 13.0.3 recently launched in October 2024.
According to Nintendo’s official data, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has now sold over 35 million copies globally, making it the third best-selling Switch game, trailing behind Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in the rankings.
The game’s creator and director, Masahiro Sakurai, confirmed in October that he is developing a new game, although details about what it entails have not yet been disclosed.
