“Casey Hudson’s Ambitious Sci-Fi Sports Game and Studio Closure: A Sour Note in Gaming History”
Due to an “unforeseen lack of funding.”
Humanoid Origin, the studio established by former Mass Effect director Casey Hudson in 2021, is halting development of its unnamed sci-fi game and closing its doors, following “an unforeseen lack of funding that rendered [it] unable to continue operations.”
Hudson, who also held the position of BioWare general manager before leaving the studio in 2020, declared the founding of Humanoid Origin (originally named Humanoid Studios) in June 2021, hinting that it was working on an “entirely new IP.” A year later, Hudson provided additional details about the “multi-platform AAA game,” along with initial concept art, describing it as a “character-driven narrative in a completely new science-fiction universe.”
Today, however, Hudson issued a statement announcing the project’s cancellation and the studio’s closure. “Earlier today, we notified our staff that Humanoid Origin will be ceasing operations,” he stated. “Despite our attempts to protect the studio from widespread challenges in the industry, an unforeseen lack of funding made it impossible for us to maintain operations.”
“We’re heartbroken that we will not be able to realize our new science-fiction universe,” Hudson continued. “Our primary focus at this moment is on our team, and we are committed to assisting them in their transition to new jobs.”
“During our time together, the team displayed remarkable growth and proved that it is possible to create extraordinary work while nurturing a culture of fun and creativity. We are grateful for their talent, bravery, and camaraderie.”
“Thank you to everyone who supported us throughout our journey.”
Humanoid Origin is the latest studio affected in what has been a tragic year for the gaming industry.
