Bossa Games Faces Workforce Reductions Amidst Business Challenges

Bossa Games has dismissed an undisclosed number of employees due to what it has termed a “significant change in the games industry.”

The Surgeon Simulator and I Am Bread creator previously laid off roughly one third of its workforce in January 2024. Approximately 40 people remained with the studio following these reductions.

Now, just over a year later, studio CEO Henrique Olifiers has confirmed that the company is implementing further layoffs in an effort to endure.

“The last few years have brought a considerable amount of upheaval to the games sector as a whole, with valuable studios, teams, and games being closed or substantially downsized. We have all seen the reports, experienced the changes ourselves, or witnessed it through the perspectives of our peers and colleagues who have been affected,” wrote Olifiers in a statement published on LinkedIn.

“In our perspective, this is not a temporary phase; it’s a fundamental shift in the games industry, a redefinition of how games are created and by which types of teams. The industry of two years from now will not resemble the industry of two years past.”

Olifiers indicated that Bossa is adjusting in line with this transformation and will now concentrate on the late-stage development of Lost Skies, its forthcoming cooperative survival adventure published by Humble Games.

“As soon as Lost Skies is launched and engaged in live operations, we will reorganize into smaller teams working independently on new game concepts introduced to players as soon as possible,” the post continues.

“This necessitates saying very difficult farewells to exceptionally skilled and valued colleagues, truly some of the finest individuals in the games industry, who have been a part of our journey for a long while. We wish we could have found a way to navigate through this turbulence without having to reduce our teams, but sadly we have not succeeded in this effort.”

Game Developer has contacted Bossa for further information regarding the layoffs.
