Ballistic Moon, the studio behind the anticipated remake of Until Dawn, has reportedly shut down.

Multiple sources conversing with Insider Gaming indicate that the UK developer has “effectively closed.” These insiders mentioned that the studio has laid off an additional 20 employees since its previous round of layoffs in September 2024, which saw around 40 people let go.

The same sources noted that the remaining team members include founders Duncan Kershaw, Neil McEwan, and Chris Lamb along with “possibly” a few staff members. One insider disclosed that there’s “no one currently handling patch support for the game.”

The Until Dawn remake was released for PlayStation 5 and PC in October 2024. Since its launch, Sony has been quiet regarding its sales performance (and existence), and it appears to have had a slow start in the UK market.

Kershaw, McEwan, and Lamb previously worked at Until Dawn’s original creator, Supermassive Games, before establishing Ballistic Moon in 2020. The remake represents the developer’s first and only released game.

Insider Gaming highlighted that the company is still operational in “technical terms,” but the founders have reportedly failed to secure funding or a new publisher, and “there is no ongoing work.” Additional support from Sony was apparently discussed, such as potential funding for further updates to the remake, but those funds never materialized.

Game Developer has reached out to Sony and Ballistic Moon and will provide updates when a response is received.
