**Assassin’s Creed Origins Faces Steam Backlash Following Troubling Windows Update**
In 2024, Microsoft initiated the distribution of Windows 11 version 24H2, and developers along with gamers promptly discovered that this upgrade was causing chaos with various Ubisoft titles. Although some games have been repaired, issues still persist within the trilogy of Assassin’s Creed Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla, with the first title facing the brunt of the complaints on Steam.
On November 22 of last year, Microsoft announced that several Ubisoft titles risked becoming “unresponsive during launch, loading, or during active gameplay” due to the impacts of 24H2. Patches for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Star Wars Outlaws quickly resolved the issues in those games, but the slightly older Assassin’s Creed titles continue to struggle.
At present, Windows 11 will not permit the installation of the 24H2 update if you have any impacted game installed. Therefore, if you’ve been slowly progressing through Origins prior to the rollout, you might still be fine. However, if you recently purchased a title like Origins—which just went down to $5.99 as part of the current Steam Winter Sale—you could already have the 24H2 update installed and could be in for a significant headache.
Origins maintains a “very positive” overall Steam rating with 85% favorable reviews, but in the last 30 days, those ratings have fallen to a “mixed” 61%. While some of the negative reviews focus on the game’s content itself—or general complaints about Ubisoft as a whole—the vast majority are aimed at the 24H2 update and the resulting crashes.
In a post pinned to the game’s Steam forum, a developer stated that “Ubisoft and Microsoft are collaborating on a solution and will share more details when available.” Interestingly, although this same message is pinned in the forums for both Odyssey and Valhalla, it is exclusively Origins that is facing the harsh reviews. Likely, everyone who picked up some Assassin’s Creed during the Steam sale was just trying to enjoy their time with Origins.
Subjectively, I managed to launch Origins on my PC with 24H2 installed and encountered no issues—though that was just after a few minutes of testing. Your experiences may differ here, but let’s hope Ubisoft and Microsoft rectify this for all affected players sooner rather than later.
There are numerous upcoming Assassin’s Creed titles on the horizon, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows is arriving very soon.
