Apple has allegedly halted the manufacture of its expensive £3500 Vision Pro headset, as excess stock has accumulated.

This information originates from a report by The Information, which was first published last year and has now gained wider attention (thanks, Kotaku).

According to insiders, Apple supply chains had prepared sufficient components for at least 500,000 Vision Pro headsets by October 2024, but only around 370,000 were actually sold. This situation has resulted in “tens of thousands of undelivered components” still awaiting deployment.

It is reported that Apple now believes it has produced enough components to meet the Vision Pro’s overall expected lifetime sales, which are lower than previously anticipated.

These figures roughly correspond with a report released by the UK’s Financial Times last summer, where suppliers indicated they expected to manufacture fewer than 400,000 units of the Vision Pro by the end of the last year.

That same report claimed Apple had significantly reduced its internal sales targets for the headset due to manufacturing challenges, after previously anticipating at least 1 million sales in 2024.

Apple has reportedly faced challenges in efficiently producing the Vision Pro’s two micro-OLED displays for each eye, as well as the device’s outward-facing lens.

The Vision Pro’s price – about 10 times that of Meta Quest VR headsets – has likely also contributed to its inaccessibility for many VR enthusiasts. While Apple still reportedly intends to pair the Vision Pro with additional devices, the company has yet to clarify its usage scenarios.

Apple refers to the Vision Pro as a “spatial computer” that “seamlessly integrates digital content with your physical environment,” enabling users to navigate apps or media through voice commands and gaze.
