Analyst apologises for mistakenly claiming Remaining Fantasy 16 provided 3.5m copies
This figure was originally reported as an internal assessment and was not disclosed by publisher Square Enix’s own data.
An analyst who asserted that Final Fantasy 16 had sold 3.5 million units has apologized, clarifying that the number was merely an estimate and not verified sales figures.
Toyo Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda has since amended the firm’s report to highlight that the figure came from its own estimates and was not disclosed by Square Enix‘s official data.
“Toyo Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda has issued an apology for his erroneous claim regarding Final Fantasy XVI sale figures!” shared Genki on Twitter/X (thanks, TheGamer).
“The previous article indicated that the number of copies sold for Final Fantasy 16 was mentioned by Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu during the financial results briefing, but this was based on Toyo Securities’ internal estimate and was a misstatement by the author,” the Japanese-language report now states, as translated by a machine.
“We sincerely apologize and wish to correct this.”

Square Enix has been somewhat reserved regarding the sales of Final Fantasy 16. Within a month of Final Fantasy 16’s launch in June 2023, Square Enix stated that they had been “extremely strong”, but acknowledged a month later that the sales did not meet expectations.
Last week, we learned that the Final Fantasy series has now sold over 200 million copies worldwide, solidifying Final Fantasy as one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time, despite a recent decline in sales.
