Amaze founder hastily steps motivate after harassing tournament workers
Amaze founder and artistic director Thorsten S. Wiedemann is stepping down after breaching the tournament’s safe environment policy and code of conduct.
In a statement published on the Amaze website, Wiedemann acknowledged engaging in unprofessional behavior at Amaze Sheffield in August 2024 by making disrespectful remarks towards members of the production team and displaying “non-sexual harassment under the influence of alcohol.”
“Upon reflecting on my actions, I realize that I behaved inappropriately and will take full accountability,” said Wiedemann. “I shouted at the production and organizing team when the event was concluded, which was entirely disrespectful. I made offensive comments towards a participating DJ and their music, which was unnecessary. I intruded on others’ personal boundaries, which was inconsiderate and out of line.”
“I sincerely regret my conduct during the event and comprehend how it adversely affected others. This was completely wrong, and I am committed to learning from this experience to ensure it does not happen again and to mend what has been damaged.”
Wiedemann has resigned less than two months before Amaze Berlin is set to commence on May 14, 2025.
He will be stepping back from all public roles temporarily as he begins treatment to address the “underlying issues” of his behavior. It is uncertain when Wiedemann will return or in what capacity.

Amaze was founded over a decade ago to highlight independent video games and various forms of playful media.
As highlighted in the Amaze code of conduct, event organizers state they are “dedicated to providing a harassment-free social environment for everyone. They have also expressed regret for Wiedemann’s “unacceptable” conduct.
“Our apologies extend to all participants of the Sheffield production, including performers, DJs, artists, venue staff, and attendees who were affected by this incident. We wish to thank those who came forward with this information to the A MAZE. / Berlin team and entrusted us with their concerns,” they wrote.
A series of immediate and long-term changes will be implemented based on Wiedemann’s actions, including an organizational restructure aimed at decentralizing the decision-making process and efforts to enhance the visibility of the code of conduct.
An updated emergency response framework will also be introduced to provide a “clearer formal protocol and team structure to respond swiftly to any future incidents.”
