Amaze founder and director steps lend a hand following investigation into “negative” habits

Thorsten Wiedemann, the founder and director of Amaze, has “withdrawn” and expressed regret, acknowledging in a public announcement that he had “behaved inappropriately” and was previously “verbally abusive” towards colleagues and attendees at an event held in August.

In their statement, the organization – which highlights independent and arthouse games, immersive media, and digital culture – recognized “breaches” of its safe space policy and code of conduct that occurred in Sheffield, UK.

Pointing out “serious concerns about the safety and integrity of [its] events,” the Amaze Berlin team confirmed that it had examined “various incidents of unprofessional behavior leading up to the event, as well as inappropriate actions, offensive verbal remarks, and non-sexual harassment influenced by alcohol during the event.”

Labeling such conduct as “unacceptable,” the team apologized to “everyone involved in the Sheffield production, including performers, DJs, artists, venue staff, and visitors who were affected.”

Wiedemann also personally expressed regret, stating: “I genuinely want to apologize for my behavior at Amaze Sheffield in August 2024. Upon reflection, I recognize that I acted inappropriately and must take full responsibility. I yelled at the production and organizing team when the event was abruptly canceled, which was entirely disrespectful. My remarks towards a participating DJ and their music were unwarranted and offensive. I invaded others’ personal space, which was inconsiderate and out of line.

“I profoundly regret my actions during the event and understand how negatively they affected others. This was completely unacceptable, and I am committed to learning from this experience to ensure it never happens again and to make amends for what was damaged.
