Alberta scraps tax credit score plans for Canadian game studios
Officials now declare strategic alliances are “the most efficient and enduring” remedy to bolster game development.
Efforts to reinstate a tax incentive for developers in Alberta, Canada, have been abandoned.
As reported by The Logic, Premier Danielle Smith revealed intentions to restore the initiative in November 2022; however, Alberta officials have now opted to “support the digital media gaming sector through strategic funding collaborations and investments,” moving away from providing “sector-specific” tax incentives.
Alberta’s Innovation Minister, Nate Glubish, was assigned by Smith to create a tax proposal comparable to those in other major Canadian development centers such as Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia, which have been granting tax credits to game developers of 37.5%, 40%, and 17.5%, respectively, with the latter increasing to 25% in September.
Jonathan Gauthier, press secretary for Glubish, informed the publication that strategic alliances are “the most efficient and enduring” way to promote game development in Alberta.
