Developer Mad Mimic and the studio Gentle Up Video games have announced that their pirate metroidvania title Mark of the Deep is set to launch on Switch in January 2025.
You might remember that this title was originally planned for an October 2024 release — a deadline that, admittedly, was not achieved — and while it’s never ideal to see an appealing game postponed, the new launch window isn’t too far off.
If you missed the initial reveal, Mark of the Deep places you on a shipwrecked cursed island (the least desirable type of island), where you must battle various adversities in an effort to reunite your crew. The exploration features a metroidvania structure, and the developers emphasize a distinct Soulslike approach to the combat — so expect to see quite a few dodge rolls.
After watching the new gameplay trailer (above), we were reminded a bit of Hades given the game’s isometric perspective, dynamic animations, and overall aesthetic. Certainly, there are no roguelike elements involved, but we would be surprised if Supergiant’s journey through the underworld didn’t inspire at least a little of the visual design.
