After Apple originally announced the first version of Halo in 1999, Xbox apparently called Bungie and said “‘Steve Jobs can’t have that. We’re going to buy you.'”
Halo and Master Chief’s co-creator Marcus Lehto recently elaborated on the series’ initial phases, and has even revealed how Microsoft wrested the game from competitor Apple’s grasp.
Initially, before Halo emerged as the flagship title for Microsoft’s Xbox console, it was intended to be a third-person shooter designed for Apple’s Macs. CEO and company visionary Steve Jobs even showcased the game to the audience on stage during 1999’s Macworld Conference, which still featured an epic theme tune and extraterrestrials but was otherwise quite distinct from the Halo we are familiar with today.
