Red Dead Redemption To Receive Free Xbox Series X|S Upgrade This December
Announcement []: It’s confirmed! Rockstar Games has revealed today that Red Dead Redemption is set to receive an upgrade for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on December 2nd, 2025.
This edition will feature 60FPS, improved visual quality, HDR support, and resolutions reaching up to 4K. If you possess the digital version that was initially made backwards compatible for Xbox One (and is still playable today on Series X and S), you will be eligible to upgrade to the upgraded version at no cost.
The reference to “transferring game progress” seems not to pertain to Xbox, however, as that capability appears to be reserved exclusively for PlayStation and Nintendo at this point. Rockstar mentions that the new RDR launch has been developed in collaboration with Double Eleven and Cast Iron Games, and will also be included in the GTA+ subscription collection on December 2nd.
Additionally, you will receive everything included – Red Dead Redemption, Undead Nightmare, and extra content from the Game of the Year Edition.
We will provide further information below, and you can check out the latest trailer above.
“Gamers on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S can anticipate a seamless 60 frames per second experience, enhanced visual quality, HDR support, and resolutions up to 4K. On Nintendo Switch 2, we’ve fully utilized this new technology with support for DLSS, HDR, mouse controls, and the same smooth 60 frames per second gameplay at high resolution.”
“Current owners on PS4, Nintendo Switch, or the digital backward-compatible edition on Xbox One will have the option to upgrade digitally for free. Those who have the PS4 version can use previous PS4 save data to continue where they left off, and Switch 2 gamers can pick up from their earlier save data from the prior Nintendo Switch console.”
Initial Report: There’s been considerable discussion around Red Dead Redemption 2 potentially receiving an upgrade for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, but meanwhile, the original title in the series has unexpectedly been rated for multiple current-generation platforms.
The ESRB has particularly rated Red Dead Redemption for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PS5, and Nintendo Switch 2. Additional details have not yet been disclosed, so we remain unsure of the implications of this new rating.
Here’s a glimpse of it:
Of course, Red Dead Redemption is already accessible on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S due to backwards compatibility, but it remains fundamentally based on the Xbox 360 version. This implies it is still limited to 30 frames per second across all Xbox consoles, while it is available at 60FPS on PlayStation 5 due to a newer adaptation.
An upgraded version of the original RDR could be a welcomed development for Xbox enthusiasts, though the feasibility will depend entirely on the cost. The PS4 and Nintendo Switch edition launched at $50 in 2023, which is a hefty price for a game that already operates well on contemporary Xbox consoles.
Let’s await the outcome… there is a possibility this could merely be an error after all.
