BioWare has had a challenging year, as Dragon Age: The Veilguard performed so poorly that it was almost immediately included in PS Plus Essential.

The studio faced layoffs – yet, notably, did not shut down – redirecting its focus on the upcoming Mass Effect. This title was revealed back in 2020, but seems to be no nearer to launch.

You might forgive yourself for not remembering that yesterday was N7 Day, a date historically significant for Mass Effect revelations.

This year, all it could genuinely express was reassurance that the new title remains in development, although some new artwork has been unveiled by fans as part of an ARG.

Executive producer Mike Gamble remarked:

“Let’s begin by clarifying: the next Mass Effect title is in development, and [EA] along with BioWare is dedicated to narrating more tales in this universe. At present, the team is entirely focused on Mass Effect. We have vast stories to explore, numerous features to develop, and many romances to explore. We are thrilled by what we are creating, and we assure you: when we’re prepared, it’ll be incredibly enjoyable to reveal.”

To be honest, Gamble did incorporate a covert code in his blog entry, which was swiftly deciphered, leading to a webpage featuring a solitary piece of new artwork titled ‘Civil War’.

The embedded image displays a seasoned Krogan battling alongside his kind.

We may not be entirely versed in our Mass Effect lore to delve into the particulars, although we are certain that the Genophage – the infertility mechanism infamously utilized by the Turians and a pivotal plot element in the original trilogy – will somehow relate to the events here.

Perhaps we will discover more during the forthcoming Amazon Prime television series, which Gamble also highlighted in his blog communication. It appears the script for this is still being written, even though it will take place post the first three games. So, there’s that.

And that concludes your annual Mass Effect update. Catch you next November 7th, perhaps?
