At times, you encounter a concept so absurd, you can’t help but sit up, lean closer, and hammer your finger against that Steam Wishlist button as quickly as possible. Spore colliding with Dark Souls did precisely that for me earlier today.
Introducing Strange Seed, a game drawing inspiration from EA’s highly ambitious yet imperfect life simulator, Spore. However, this time, it’s ditching all the space exploration elements. The essence is that you start as a basic blob, but as you vanquish more creatures, you unlock new body components that can then be affixed to your spherical form. Wings, claws, fungi, peculiar extensions – take your pick.

“With 7 component slots and over 40 beings to uncover, you’ll possess more than 10 million possible combinations to play with,” the Steam page assures.
The other thrilling aspect of the equation arises from the “fierce, Soulslike bosses” and combat where “success isn’t merely about reflexes: the appropriate arrangement of components could determine the line between survival and annihilation.” Given the numerous possibilities, as you might imagine, there’s ample space for you to “discover methods to outwit your way to triumph!”
On Reddit, the developers mentioned that “your greatest adversary… is your personal poor design decisions,” and Strange Seed is “a bit Spore, a bit EVO Search for Eden, and a bit Dark Souls – a little bit of everything to be honest.”
The Dark Souls reference might raise some eyebrows, but in this context, I’m presuming that the game’s soulslike characteristics reveal themselves in how you construct your quirky creature character and how to remodel it to tackle specific hurdles. Need to bridge the gap to that object over a lava pool? Grow some wings. You get the idea.
Strange Seed is currently available on Steam.
