In Japan, Switch 2 Retail Sales Are Already Closing on PS5

The launch of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake in Japan last week was always poised to be captivating, as the franchise enjoys immense popularity and was accessible on Switch 2, Switch, and PS5.
Per Famitsu sales figures, the Switch version topped sales thanks to Nintendo’s vast install base, moving 232k copies.
However, the Switch 2 iteration’s 84k units was only slightly behind the PS5 edition’s 96k units, demonstrating how the new system is already closing the gap with Sony’s console.
It’s crucial to consider one significant factor here: Famitsu exclusively monitors physical sales, so even in Japan—where digital purchases constitute a smaller segment of the overall picture compared to the rest of the globe—a segment of data remains unaccounted for.

Nevertheless, it illustrates how swiftly Nintendo’s latest console is bridging the gap with the PS5 regarding multiformat software sales recognition.
The PS5 has recorded 7,129,204 units sold in Japan so far, while the Switch 2’s install base stands at 2,551,846. Yet, the figures for major multiformat titles are already this close.
Another aspect worth noting is that the Switch 2 version of the game utilizes a debated Game Key Card, but it appears this isn’t significantly impeding Nintendo’s capacity to move software in its home market.
As we understand, Japan as a whole generally prefers portability, which undoubtedly advantages Nintendo. However, it increasingly seems there’s very little Sony can execute to disrupt Switch’s firm grip on its domestic market.
