In a victory for smaller-scale projects priced below $70, Mafia: The Old Country publisher 2K has deemed the PS5 title a triumph, having surpassed its internal sales forecasts.
During its most recent financial earnings call, where it was also announced that GTA 6 has been pushed back to November 2026, the company’s CEO Strauss Zelnick informed The Game Business that the title’s success demonstrates the existence of a market for exceptional narrative experiences.
He expressed: “What we anticipated was validated, which is simply… if you provide consumers with an outstanding narrative experience that’s enjoyable, somewhat contained, and at a reasonable price, then you can achieve the ideal outcome.”
Instead of launching at full price, Mafia: The Old Country is priced at £44.99 / $49.99 and offers a story-centric experience where the narrative takes center stage. The open world is maintained as a distinct mode in the main menu, permitting the core story to unfold across multiple chapters.
There’s speculation that another installment in the series has already been authorized, according to remarks made by a voice actor involved in The Old Country. Hangar 13 “received approval for a sequel, for another Mafia game, which is quite thrilling”, stated Isabella’s voice actor Carina Conti. This, along with today’s comments, implies that another Mafia title would target a similar scale.
For the time being, the developer has confirmed The Old Country will receive further content in the form of a Free Ride mode, alongside additional activities and gameplay interactions. This was revealed back in August and is expected to release “in the coming months”. However, it hasn’t yet come to fruition.
