Earlier in the year, a collective of modders united to accomplish the unimaginable: transfer Bethesda’s Morrowind into FromSoftware’s Elden Ring. Essentially, this venture seems like an Elden Ring modification that allows players to experience The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind in a fresh, third-person perspective, and we’ve just received our initial update on this wild endeavor.

Modder and YouTuber InfernoPlus uploaded an update video this week to inform everyone on the mod’s advancements since its announcement and the involvement of additional volunteer modders to assist.

“The first thing to observe is that, in this version, the integration for NPCs is nearly at full equivalence to Morrowind,” the modder elaborated, which elicited a hearty laugh, especially right after an NPC delivers an exceptionally robotic line. Perhaps my recollection of Morrowind’s NPCs is overly generous.

“It will never be precisely 100% correct, but as it stands now, it functions as it should,” InfernoPlus added, before mentioning that the text-to-speech voices are provisional – the team merely requires placeholder dialogue to ensure that everything is operating as planned.

Other segments of the mod are also progressing well. Items are “partially integrated.” You can witness the game’s speechcraft and how an NPC’s disposition can rise or lower. Oh, and you can even engage in criminal activities, steal items, pickpocket, and ultimately get incarcerated.

The sole aspect inducing anxiety for the modder is its navmeshes (navigation meshes), which is essentially a representation of the world that the player does not observe but aids NPCs in pathfinding. As InfernoPlus states, “AI simply doesn’t function without navmeshes.”

“Regarding the navmesh matter, we haven’t really achieved substantial progress,” he remarked. “That challenge is currently our primary obstacle, and in several ways, it might be the sole factor impeding us from completing this project in the long term. It’s the only element of the project where I am uncertain of what the solution will entail, and there’s a possibility we might not resolve it. Hopefully, it’ll be alright. I believe it’s feasible… but that remains my primary concern.”
