Haunting season is certainly here, and Nintendo has celebrated this event by introducing the fantastic Luigi’s Mansion to the Switch 2’s GameCube NSO collection.

Numerous individuals will be revisiting this today for the first time in many years, but having spent countless hours with Luigi’s Mansion 2, 3, and 2 HD over the intervening years, you may find the original’s inverted controls somewhat perplexing.

The gameplay is extremely precision-based, with a firm hold on Luigi’s flashlight and vacuum being crucial for some ghost-catching, yet the game defaults to inverted Y-axis controls. Therefore, when you first step into the mansion, moving the right joystick down will lift Luigi’s light upward, while moving it upward will direct the torch downward.

It certainly requires some adjustment if you’re approaching the original after experiencing the sequels, but if you consistently forget which direction is up, there’s a method to uninvert the controls.

To ‘correct’ Luigi’s Mansion’s inverted camera on Switch 2, adhere to these instructions:

  • While playing Luigi’s Mansion in NSO, press ‘‘ to open the Suspend Menu
  • Navigate to ‘View/Change Controls
  • Select ‘Change Controls
  • Pick the control you wish to modify (‘Change Flashlight or Vacuum Direction Up/Down‘, in this case), then select the command you want to alter it to.

Any modifications you implement will be displayed in red on the new control menu, just like the image below:

And just like that, you can consider the controls uninverted! You can revert it at any time by going back to the ‘Change Controls‘ menu and pressing ‘X‘.

Of course, there’s another control method available for Luigi’s Mansion, which is still featured in this NSO edition. ‘Sidestep’ controls allow Luigi to maintain his direction regardless of how you move the left stick, while the right stick will enable him to rotate to manage the flashlight/vacuum.

This control scheme was never particularly favored during the GameCube era, but you can still experiment with it on Switch 2 NSO by pressing ‘+’, then navigating to ‘Control Style: Sidestep’ on the right. Don’t worry, you can switch back at any moment!
