“We don’t have a precise date established”

In March 2024, developer Frogwares revealed The Sinking City 2 for Xbox Series X|S, with intentions to launch its forthcoming Lovecraft-inspired journey in 2025. Up to this moment, the team had been intending to unexpectedly release the game towards the year’s end, but that is no longer feasible – thus, the studio has opted to postpone the game until 2026.
In a recent press statement shared with Pure Xbox, Frogwares cites the game’s postponement to both a “considerable genre transition” into survival horror and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Here’s how the team articulates that genre transition, along with some additional insights regarding its plans for The Sinking City 2 in the upcoming year:
“Transitioning to survival horror for the first time has posed an entirely new type of challenge for us as well. We’ve been crafting investigative adventures for over two decades, but survival horror demands a completely different approach to design. Tension, pacing, combat, etc. We’ve always cherished this genre as enthusiasts, but once you initiate the creation yourself, you comprehend how much still remains to be accomplished. It’s thrilling, yet it undoubtedly slows down development.
We don’t possess a specific date established for 2026 yet, but we believed it was preferable to at least disclose what we know. We’d rather be certain than declare something now only to alter it again. Rest assured, we’re currently targeting the initial half of 2026, so it’s a matter of months, not years.”
As a slight bonus, the team has unveiled several new screenshots today as part of its delay announcement – and we’re going to select a few of those to share with you below. You can also look forward to a wealth of new footage for The Sinking City 2 “over the forthcoming months”, and we’ll link to this year’s gameplay reveal beneath these fresh screenshots as well.
