That New Digimon Game’s Turning Out to Be a Huge Hit

Update []: Here’s a brief update on Digimon Story Time Stranger from the previous weekend: it’s a genuine success!
The game continues to perform exceptionally well on the PS Store, holding around eighth position on the US sales ranking.
And on Steam, it achieved a significant increase in its active players, hitting 84k at peak hours on Sunday.
It’s unlikely that the game will rise further, but it’s evidently proving to be a substantial success for Bandai Namco. We may receive some preliminary sales data shortly.

Original Story: While it had a strong following mainly in the 90s, we’d likely categorize Digimon as a niche title these days. However, that would be incorrect, because the new release Digimon Story Time Stranger is gaining considerable traction.
While more details are needed, fans have observed that the game reached over 70k active players on the PC platform Steam.
Even though concurrent players don’t directly indicate sales, a larger figure usually signifies a higher percentage of players, which theoretically suggests the title has performed well.
In fact, comparing it to earlier Digimon titles, the contrast is striking.
For instance, Digimon Survive – which, to be fair, belongs to a different sub-series – peaked at slightly over 6k players.
Meanwhile, Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth – Time Stranger’s immediate predecessor – hit just under 3.5k players. That game did, however, launch on PC several years post its PlayStation debut.
We naturally can’t ascertain how many are engaging with the PS5 version, but on the US PS Store, the game is currently in seventh place on the digital sales chart, trailing only titles like Ghost of Yotei, Fortnite, NBA 2K26, and Madden NFL 26. It actually surpasses Roblox and Battlefield 6!
We believe that if performances are as favorable as they appear, Bandai Namco will issue a sales report soon.
It’s unfortunate, then, that the game did not entirely meet our reviewer’s anticipations.
In our 6/10 assessment, we stated the game “wastes so much potential”:
“If Digimon Story Time Stranger simply allowed its largely outstanding RPG systems to flourish, it could be ranked among the best of Digimon games. Unfortunately, it becomes hindered by disappointingly linear design that restricts combat and group-based advancement at nearly every step. Even though it is filled with clear promise, Time Stranger ultimately feels like a frustrating misfire.”
