That New Digimon Game's Looking Like a Big Hit 1

Although it found success mainly in the 90s, it’s safe to place Digimon in a specialized category in current times. However, that would be a misconception, as the new title Digimon Story Time Stranger is experiencing remarkable growth.

While further details are awaited, enthusiasts have observed that the game has surged to over 70k concurrent players on the PC platform Steam.

Though concurrent players don’t equate to sales, a larger count usually indicates a higher number of players, which theoretically suggests the title has sold effectively.

In fact, when compared to earlier Digimon titles, the shift is significantly noticeable.

For instance, Digimon Survive – which, to be fair, belongs to a different sub-series – reached just over 6k players.

Conversely, Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth – Time Stranger’s immediate predecessor – peaked at merely 3.5k players. Although that title debuted on PC several years after its launch on PlayStation.

While we cannot ascertain the number of players on the PS5 version, the game currently ranks seventh on the US PS Store digital best-sellers chart, trailing behind titles like Ghost of Yotei, Fortnite, NBA 2K26, and Madden NFL 26. It even surpasses Roblox and Battlefield 6!

We’re confident that if everything is progressing as favorably as it appears, Bandai Namco will provide a sales update soon.

It’s unfortunate, then, that the game didn’t meet our reviewer’s expectations.

In our 6/10 assessment, we remarked that the game “wastes an abundance of potential”:

“If Digimon Story Time Stranger allowed its predominantly exceptional RPG systems to flourish, it could be regarded among the elite of Digimon games. However, instead, it becomes ensnared in disappointingly straightforward design that restricts combat and party-based advancement at almost every stage. Despite being filled with evident potential, Time Stranger ultimately feels like a frustrating misdirection.”
