“I am concerned about that”

The Xbox studio Treyarch is succeeding 2024’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 with Black Ops 7 later this year; this marks the first occurrence of Black Ops having consecutive releases in its history. Although the forthcoming installment is set in a vastly different era from the previous year’s title, a senior member of the team has confessed there is some concern that this may induce franchise exhaustion.
During an interview with CharlieIntel (through Dexerto), Yale Miller, Treyarch’s Senior Director of Production, responded to queries about whether he felt uneasy regarding the recent two Black Ops titles. Here is their remark:
“I believe the truthful answer is yes. I am concerned about that […] Clearly, there was a strategy with the two MW titles followed by this one. We will observe how the franchise evolves in the future. We’re thrilled about the prospects it has provided us, yet we would all be lying if we claimed we weren’t concerned about that.”
The reference to ‘two MW games’ pertains to Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3, which were also released consecutively in 2022 and 2023. Despite MW3 managing to recover towards the end of its lifespan, its initial release was underwhelming; especially the brief single-player campaign that was a significant reason behind our 6/10 review score a few years ago.
It seems somewhat likely that Black Ops 7 could experience a similar path as MW3. Naturally, we cannot predict how the campaign will perform just yet, but Miller further stated that “we’re definitely planning to enhance our content through our live seasons”, indicating the team intends to expand and develop the game throughout the year.
