Stanley Kubrick enthusiasts can enjoy a 30% discount on their reservation for The Criterion Collection edition of Eyes Wide Shut. The iconic director’s controversial concluding film makes its debut on 4K Blu-ray on November 25. Preorders for Eyes Wide Shut’s 3-disc 4K Blu-ray version are reduced to $35 (previously $50) at Amazon. Criterion is also unveiling a newly released 1080p Blu-ray version on the same date, which is also available at 30% off, bringing the cost down to $28.
Considered Kubrick’s most bizarre—definitely the most sexually charged—film, Eyes Wide Shut was a significant box office success, yet it was regarded as overly disturbing and peculiar by some critics and audiences back in 1999. Nowadays, however, numerous critics and fans view Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman’s work as a masterpiece. While this marks Criterion’s second 4K offering from Kubrick—Barry Lyndon was the first in July—almost all of Kubrick’s films can now be acquired on 4K Blu-ray from additional distributors.
Eyes Wide Shut: The Criterion Collection (4K Blu-ray)
$35 (initially $50) | Launches November 25
The 4K release of Eyes Wide Shut consists of a three-disc package with one 4K UHD disc and two 1080p Blu-ray discs. Like other Criterion releases, this version has been crafted to align as closely as possible to Kubrick’s thoroughly meticulous vision of how it was intended to be presented. Although the celebrated director passed away in 1999 shortly after showing the final cut to Warner Bros., Criterion’s restoration was overseen by the film’s director of photography, Larry Smith. Given that the 1080p version is derived from the 4K restoration, it should also represent an enhancement over the existing Blu-ray version.
Importantly, Criterion restored the international cut—the previously mentioned final version—not the US theatrical release, which was edited to secure an R rating.
On a technical standpoint, this release provides support for Dolby Vision HDR and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound.
For the additional materials, new discussions have been conducted with Smith, photographer and second-unit director Lisa Leone, and Stanley Kubrick archivist Georgina Orgill.
Furthermore, there are archival features from past Blu-ray releases of Eyes Wide Shut, including interviews with the performers, a documentary analyzing the unfinished works of Kubrick, and more. All of these can be viewed on the bonus standard Blu-ray disc. The standard Blu-ray version is a two-disc collection with identical supplementary features.
Inside the packaging, you’ll also discover a booklet with
a 1999 discussion featuring Kubrick and actor Sydney Pollack, along with a fresh essay by writer Megan Abbott.

Stanley Kubrick: The Criterion Collection
As noted, Eyes Wide Shut is merely the second Kubrick film to attain a 4K Blu-ray edition from Criterion—most of his works, however, are accessible on 4K from various distributors. Barry Lyndon, Kubrick’s excellent 1975 historical drama about a swindler who penetrates high society, is available for $31.64 (was $50) on 4K Blu-ray at Amazon. Barry Lyndon provides a three-hour visual spectacle owing to its lavish cinematography and opulent costume designs. It earned the Academy Award for Best Cinematography.
It seems probable that Criterion will unveil additional 4K Blu-rays of Kubrick’s oeuvre in the future. Barry Lyndon has been part of the distributor’s catalog on standard Blu-ray since 2017. Criterion also offers standard Blu-ray versions of several other Kubrick films, including Dr. Strangelove and The Killing.
