Regrettably, however, as per the showrunner of the DCU series and the genius behind this realm of lethal squads and steel men, it simply wasn’t in the plans.
While analyzing the recent emergence of (gasp) Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) in this week’s installment of Peacemaker, James Gunn was queried by Variety if we might anticipate his arch enemy to swoop in and make a cameo as well. Nonetheless, Gunn made it Kryptonian crystal apparent that there would be no extraordinary surprise.
“No,” Gunn confirmed. “In fact, David was quite displeased that Nick appeared on the series, while he did not. It just didn’t fit.”
Instead, Gunn dedicated time to bringing Peacemaker’s new adversary, Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), and the imprisoned competitor of Clark Kent together, which seems like unfavorable news for many within the DCU. “I required Lex in the series to fulfill a particular role. And indeed, what Lex and Rick Flag are scheming significantly impacts an aspect of Man of Tomorrow,” elaborated Gunn, referencing the Superman sequel, which may or may not feature a Brainiac. “So all of that is linked.”
Could this signify the inception of a daunting alliance between two highly motivated and influential beings? It certainly appears so. “However, this connection between Rick Flag and Lex Luthor is potentially detrimental for Superman and all meta-humans.” We will have to observe what further developments occur as Peacemaker season 2 unfolds next week.
