Peacemaker season 2’s big alternate universe twist was somehow hiding in John Cena’s opening credits dance moves all along

For quite a while, fans and internet detectives had been speculating that something was amiss with Peacemaker season 2’s alternate reality. Naturally, we now understand that is indeed true, but Earth-X’s significant mystery was essentially in plain view the entire time – during the opening credits.

Although it appears to be a picturesque destination for Christopher Smith (complete with his father and surviving sibling), the alternate reality in Peacemaker season 2 takes place in a timeline where the Nazis triumphed in World War 2 and there is a troubling absence of non-white individuals on the streets.

The swastika on the American banner and Adebayo being pursued by a substantial crowd of white individuals certainly reinforced that notion, but John Cena’s dance routines actually revealed the truth weeks earlier.

The opening credits, frequently a summary of each season, filled with subtle adjustments for new episodes, showcase Cena’s Peacemaker forming a swastika shape with his arms within the first 10 seconds. As illustrated below, it’s not truly up for debate, either – and is a clever method to discreetly present a spoiler in plain view.

Gunn previously confessed to GamesRadar+ that the opening credits of the second season were the only element he felt “uneasy” about, primarily owing to the first season’s sequence becoming such a viral sensation.

“It was the sole aspect that made me genuinely anxious. People ask, ‘How are you going to top the first season?’ You cannot surpass the first season because, in truth, viewers were unaware that a dance sequence was forthcoming,” Gunn stated. “So they experienced that inaugural episode of Peacemaker, and suddenly there’s a dance routine, leaving people wondering, ‘What is happening? This is the most outrageous thing I have ever encountered.’ You can never replicate that. I need to recapture that within the episodes themselves.”
