Ghost of Tsushima is an expansive open-world title with a plethora of activities, and finally achieving that coveted platinum trophy requires a considerable time commitment. If you’re feeling somewhat empty about the numerous hours you dedicated to following those foxes, PlayStation is ready to enhance your experience with a unique offering: a chance to spend $70 on exclusive merchandise.
“If you’ve ever felt your Ghost of Tsushima adventure deserved to be commemorated beyond the gaming screen, we’ve got something unique to reveal,” Sony states in its statement. “Beginning today, we’re launching a fresh merchandise program that honors your in-game accomplishments with exclusive collectibles — starting with Ghost Rewards.”
Should you possess the “Living Legend” platinum trophy, you can order a $25 commemorative pin, crafted from “zinc alloy metal” featuring “clear enamel infill and laser-printed art,” packaged in a “bespoke leatherette display box and sleeve.” Although I’m not entirely sure what that entails, the pin does appear quite attractive in the images.
However, if that platinum trophy continues to escape you, fear not – if you’ve completed the game and attained the “Mono no Aware” gold trophy, you can alternatively purchase a $30 commemorative T-shirt embodying the game’s concluding duel. Both products are available for pre-order at this moment and will be dispatched in “2-3 months.”
I personally appreciated Ghost of Tsushima enough to earn that platinum trophy, yet upon realizing that the total cost of both items plus tax and shipping would exceed $70, my enthusiasm for the additional merchandise swiftly faded. Don’t misunderstand me; I’ve shelled out more for far less sensible collectibles, but being prompted to spend money on merch as a reward for an in-game achievement doesn’t sit well.
Particularly when there’s history of such things being provided at no charge. At the launch of GTA 4, Rockstar distributed a complimentary “key to the city” for achieving 100% completion of the open-world game within two weeks of its release. A significant regret in my gaming collection is never obtaining that key – I successfully hit 100% in GTA 4 within 14 days, but I did so a month post-launch, thus missing out on my key.
PlayStation isn’t viewing this as a one-off promotion, either. “This is merely the beginning,” Sony remarks. “Ghost of Yotei Rewards will launch later this year, providing players another chance to honor their achievements with distinctive merchandise. We’ll disclose more information as we get closer to the launch.” Whether that’s a commitment or a caution is up to you to determine.
