Three New Resolutions May Soon Be Added To Xbox Cloud Gaming

Performance could go up to 1440p

It looks like Xbox Cloud Gaming might be getting three new resolution options in the near future!

Newly-discovered code has revealed that in addition to the 720p and 1080p streams available through the Xbox Cloud Gaming service right now, there are also plans for 720pHQ, 1080pHQ and 1440p tiers.

This was shown off by the developer of Better xCloud earlier today (also shared on Windows Central):

Now, this obviously doesn’t confirm anything – we’ll have to wait for Microsoft before coming to any conclusions – but it’s been suggested that Xbox wants to make Cloud Gaming more powerful and more affordable.

Could this be a way to achieve that? With Xbox Cloud Gaming recently expanding to both Core and Standard Game Pass members, perhaps they’ll be limited to the lower resolutions while Game Pass Ultimate members will be able to reach up to 1440p? It remains to be seen, but it sounds like a solution that would make sense.

For what it’s worth, here’s what Jez Corden is speculating at Windows Central:

“To speculate, Microsoft may be exploring providing quality modes on higher Xbox Game Pass tiers, similarly to how NVIDIA GeForce Now subscriptions work. I could see 720 and 1080 resolutions being offered on the lower tiers of Xbox Game Pass, while the HQ modes and 1440 mode runs exclusively to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Obviously, higher resolutions and bitrates mean more power consumption, and thus, more costs on the platform holder.”

Anyway, we’ll keep an eye on this, and we’ll let you know if Microsoft ends up announcing anything.
