Because certain groups are pressuring payment processors to police which titles can be sold, buying games on platforms such as Steam has become somewhat awkward lately. Players who have recently attempted to finalize a Steam purchase via PayPal may have discovered the choice simply isn’t there. Valve now confirms this is limited to specific regions and has issued its own statement clarifying the situation.
“In July 2025, PayPal informed Valve that their acquiring bank for transactions in particular currencies was abruptly halting all processing linked to Steam,” Valve noted on its Purchasing Issues support page, as spotted by Rock Paper Shotgun. “Consequently, Steam purchases through PayPal are no longer possible outside of EUR, CAD, GBP, JPY, AUD and USD.”
“While we aim to re-introduce PayPal for those denominations later on, the schedule remains uncertain,” the post adds. “We’re additionally exploring alternative payment methods on Steam for affected users. Until then, please select one of our existing choices at checkout. If no suitable option is accessible, recall you can top-up your account using a Steam Wallet code.”
Valve also told RPS that the issue stems from “content found on Steam connected to remarks we’ve already made about Mastercard.”
“One of PayPal’s acquiring banks chose to cease handling any Steam purchases, thereby suspending PayPal for a range of currencies on the store,” a Valve representative elaborated.
Put plainly, unless your transaction uses euros, pounds, yen, or any of the named dollar variants, Steam won’t accept PayPal for the foreseeable future.
