Targeting “harsh authenticity” in Battlefield 6

It appears Battlefield 6 won’t give users the option to slip into a Sabrina Carpenter outfit or Darth Vader armour months after release; studio leadership is locking the entire production into a “gritty realism” tone.

During this morning’s reveal, reporters pressed the devs over how cosmetic gear will be handled, especially after the backlash aimed at Call of Duty’s increasingly absurd cosmetics.

Although Call of Duty leans more arcade-like when compared with Battlefield, its campaigns still aim for gravitas. That hasn’t stopped Activision from peddling skins of Beavis and Butt-Head, Snoop Dogg, and Lionel Messi in multiplayer lobbies, though.

These cash-grab cosmetics have drawn fierce heat from Call of Duty loyalists, yet the teams at Battlefield Studios refuse to tread the same path.

In an interview with DBLTAP, design director Shashank Uchil stated Battlefield 6 will retain a grounded feel reminiscent of Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4. “We don’t need Nicki Minaj. We’re keeping it authentic, keeping it believable.” Meanwhile, speaking to Video Gamer, UX director Alan Pimm reiterated the overarching goal is “harsh authenticity” for all character appearances.

Custom outfits are still on the menu—confirmed via the $100 Phantom Edition, which instantly unlocks four Phantom Squad uniforms—plus a Battle Pass likely packing more tactical skins. According to studio heads, every cosmetic will remain faithful to the game’s setting.
