Hideo Kojima Says We’re Either Going To Love Or Hate His Xbox-Published Game ‘OD’

Its identity remains a mystery to us

Hideo Kojima has yet to properly divulge the nature of his impending Xbox Game Studios venture code-named “OD”, although he offered a few crumbs during a fresh SSense discussion that revolved around his overall résumé and Death Stranding 2.

Wrapping up the chat, he warned that audiences will either adore or despise OD for just how wildly it veers off the beaten path, adding that “the definitive verdicts” will only crystallise a decade or two down the line.

Check out the magazine’s snippet below:

Kojima labels the project as “utterly unheard of… it will polarise.”

On launch day he’ll devour tweets, binge YouTube reactions, skim every review imaginable. Yet none of that will ruffle him. He believes his catalogue’s heritage is measured in the long game. “Meaningful judgments emerge later—ten, maybe twenty years on,” he claims.

This marks another mention by Kojima that OD defies precedent, having previously conceded that “it’s tricky to describe” and carries “risk, a fresh hurdle to overcome.”

What is clear is that it’s horror-flavoured and also part-cinematic, pushing “a brand-new media experiment”, with Get Out’s Jordan Peele among several “creative collaborators” involved.

The key update for the moment is that OD escaped the axe amid Xbox’s latest cuts, so fingers crossed we’ll see substantial footage before the year’s out—perhaps at December’s Game Awards? Time will tell…
