If you maintain a keen interest in PS5 and haven’t deserted X (or Twitter) thus far, then you’ll undoubtedly have encountered a flood of Marvel’s Spider-Man port requests this week.
In the wake of Helldivers 2’s announcement for Xbox Series X|S, the social networking site is thoroughly flooded with posts regarding Insomniac Games’ superhero title being ported to Microsoft’s console.
It remains uncertain precisely where the conjecture originated, though a seemingly innocent post from the Burbank-based studio does seem to have ignited the wave.
In this, the developer shared an image of Peter Parker along with the phrase “Hey, how are ya?”
However, this has triggered a complete avalanche of comments from Xbox enthusiasts, with many either inquiring about a port of the title or presuming the post is hinting at some sort of forthcoming announcement.
“Looks fantastic dressed in green,” one enthusiast remarked along with a mock-up of the game featuring Xbox branding.
“So, is Spider-Man 2018 headed to Xbox?” another speculated.
It’s crucial to emphasize that this isn’t merely a couple of replies: we’ve witnessed dozens, possibly even hundreds, of similar messages in recent days. Many of these have garnered likes and shares totalling in the thousands.
So, is Marvel’s Spider-Man on the way to Xbox?
Well, our assumption would be no – but we would have said the same regarding Helldivers 2 just a few weeks prior.
We believe the distinction lies in that Arrowhead’s cooperative shooter is a live service game where 50% of its income is derived from microtransactions, making the economics quite different for a one-off single-player campaign like Marvel’s Spider-Man.
Nevertheless, the series has already seen a PC port, and the initial title in the franchise is nearing seven years old.
For what it’s worth, PS Studios head Hermen Hulst recently stated that Sony must be “very deliberate about transitioning our franchises off-console to reach new audiences”. However, these remarks preceded the Helldivers 2 announcement.
If we had to wager in either direction, we’d assert there’s little likelihood of major first-party titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man making their way to Xbox, yet Sony has taken the plunge now. This kind of speculation is bound to persist, at least in the near term.
